Ferrofluid is a liquid containing suspended magnetic particles that allow it to react strongly to magnetic fields. This gives us a tangible and visual window into the normally invisible world of magnetic fields, but the applications extend far beyond.

The Ferro Fluid Dynamics group is investigating the properties of ferrofluid, including ways in which the fluid can be shaped, stabilized and rearranged by different arrangements of magnetic fields. Ferrofluid is of particular interest to the group for the purpose of haptic telemetry. Its extreme flexibility can be used to produce complex shapes that exert pressure and allow users to "feel" remote objects.
